Berlin, El Salvador: Taking Matters into Their Own Hands
Residents of Berlin, a town in El Salvador, have decided to embark on a project of their own. Frustrated by delays in President Nayib Bukele’s proposed “Bitcoin City,” the people of Berlin are creating their version of a “Bitcoin City” a few kilometers away.
The Inspiration Behind Berlin’s Bitcoin Initiative
Berlin’s Bitcoin project, led by a community named Bitcoin Berlin, aims to establish a cryptocurrency-based economy. Inspired by the success of El Zonte’s Bitcoin Beach, they plan to create an environment where financial transactions are conducted entirely through cryptocurrency, eliminating the need for traditional fiat money.
Contrasting Berlin with El Zonte

Unlike El Zonte, Berlin doesn’t have sun-soaked beaches. Instead, it’s nestled in the foothills of the Tecapa volcano mountain range, offering a cooler climate and proximity to volcanoes and the AlegrÃa Lagoon. Berlin is renowned for its coffee plantations, attracting coffee-loving tourists.
Local Support and Initiative
Bitcoin enthusiasts in Berlin assert that the local community is fully supportive of their Bitcoin City project. Many Berlin residents have chosen not to wait for the government’s Bitcoin City and have decided to take matters into their own hands.
Upcoming ‘Bitcoin Festival’ and Farmers’ Market
To promote their project, Berlin’s Bitcoin community has organized a “Bitcoin festival” scheduled for October 28 and 29. This event coincides with a popular Berlin farmers’ market, providing a platform for the community to showcase their vision of a cryptocurrency-based city.
Potential of Two ‘Bitcoin Cities’ in El Salvador
As Berlin’s Bitcoin initiative gains momentum, it raises the possibility of El Salvador having two distinct “Bitcoin Cities.” Berlin’s project reflects the town’s determination to create an economic ecosystem centered on cryptocurrency, embodying self-reliance in the crypto revolution.
